FAQ

Since we’re still a new group, our FAQ is by no means completed. If you have a question that you think is on its way to being frequently asked, leave a comment or shoot us an email and we’ll get the answer up here in no time!

Q. Is 4000 More an Oberlin College program?

A. No. Although many of our members and organizers are associated with Oberlin CollegeĀ  (as students, faculty, staff, and neighbors) this is not a college program. 4000 More strives to operate as a partnership between college-affiliated folks and the rest of the community– it’s about living inside the town of Oberlin, whether your home is a dorm or a house your family’s lived in for years. At the same time, 4000 More does have the official support of Oberlin College AND the City of Oberlin, and we’re extremely thankful for the continued enthusiasm we’ve received from both organizations.

Q. Why 4000? There aren’t even that many students at the college!

A. That’s exactly the point! Registering 4000 people who won’t always be here will do little to promote any kind of positive culture shift here in Oberlin, and besides, there are enough student-focused programs already. Like we said before, 4000 More is about everyone who lives within the city limits, not just students. As for the number itself, check out our “History” page. That should fill you in.

Q. Who can register as a 4000 More cyclist?

A. Almost anyone! There are only two requirements. In order to register with 4000 More, you must a.) have a bicycle that you can ride at least some of the time, and b.) live or work within the Oberlin city limits. That’s it! Pretty simple.

Q. I don’t have a bicycle! Can I still get involved with 4000 More?

A. Yeah, of course! We welcome support in whatever way you can offer it, and even if you’re ineligible to registerĀ  you’re absolutely able to work with us as a volunteer. We always need help with things like fundraising, promotions, and staffing events– all you’ve got to do is get in touch and we’ll have you to work before you know it! If you’re looking to get a bicycle, we can help you out with that, too– the Oberlin Bicycle Co-op and Dale’s Bike Shop are both great resources (see the “Links” bar at right), and we’d be happy to point you towards either of them.

Q. Is registering with 4000 More the same as registering your bike with the Oberlin Police Department?

A. No. Although 4000 More is good at a lot of things, getting your bike back if it’s stolen isn’t one of them! 4000 More absolutely endorses registering your bike with OPD in addition to becoming a 4kM member; although we’re working hard to build community, thefts do sometimes occur, and OPD can help you get your bike back. We also recommend investing in a good lock– keep your eyes peeled for upcoming giveaways and discounts that could help you out in that department…

Q. Hey, that’s a pretty cool logo… who designed it?

A. Our logo, pledge, and membership cards were all created by Christopher Adamson. Chris a freelance designer and student at Northwestern University. You can see his portfolio by clicking here.
